DJEEO – On the day

Ahead of the day

All computers have been reserved and all GPS devices are fully charged (left overnight to charge).
The game has been set up and registered as ready in Gamemaster (http://gamemaster.djeeo.net).
The following three documents have been printed: Teachers instruction, Team instructions and Assignment booklet.

On the day

  • Switch on GPS devices a minimum of 15 minutes before the game starts, ensuring that they remain under open skies. This will allow the devices to communicate with the satellites and establish their current positions. The devices can safely be left in the Playbox for this.
  • All computers must be set up and ready. The following computers are required: 1 for the teacher (to drive the game), 1 for the projector (for the main screen) and 1 computer per team.
  • Log in to the teacher’s computer and the computer for the projector (http://game.djeeo.net). The passwords can be found in the Teachers instructions (printed out the day before – see above). There is also a link to the main screen at  http://gamemaster.djeeo.net.
  • Learners are then split up into groups and shown their respective computers.

Introduction for learners

The teacher introduces the learners to the game:

  • Teams receive their Team instructions with team passwords and go to Game: http://game.djeeo.net and log in.
  • Once inside Game the learners must:
    • Choose a team name.
    • Enter team member names and email addresses (min. 2 members). Results will be sent to their email addresses after the game.
    • NOTE WHICH GPS device they will be using.
    • Register and give notification when they are ready.
  • Learners will then need to decide which of them will be starting as the Agents and who will remain in the Control centre, and exchange phone numbers.
  • The Agents receive their Assignment booklets and reflective vests.
  • The Agents will then go and collect their respective GPS device (IMPORTANT: Ensure that all teams get their correct GPS-number).
  • Once all teams have registered and notified that they are ready, the teacher clicks the “START” button (on the teachers computer) to start the game. The Agents are guided to the first waypoint (marked by a flag) by their Control centre team members.
  • The Control centre solves the task while the Agents move towards the waypoint where the task answer is submitted.
  • Teams must make it to the last waypoint (the ”Orange House”) and click the ”Home” button before time has run out.
  • Teams that do not make it in time lose 20 points for every minute they are late.

The game is on

Normally there is chaos for the first 10-15 minutes of the game, but this will pass. It may be necessary to help learners during this phase. Discretion is necessary in deciding just how much help should be given for a specific task, e.g. when is it appropriate to provide the answer to a task?

Remember to correct the open assignments and the closed assignments with text answers in the "Adjust points" section.

Teachers can choose to pause playing teams for evaluation during the game so that learners can receive input on how to make improvements on their co-operation, communication and problem-solving processes.

Half-time

Once all teams have returned, the teacher marks the beginning of half-time by clicking the ”Half-time” button on the teachers computer. During half-time it is important that the teacher assembles the teams and performs a short evaluation of their game, tactics and co-operation. Teachers must also ensure that the Agents and their team’s Control centre share the lessons learnt so far.
Agents and Control centre will swap roles for second half.
At the end of the break the teacher clicks the “START SECOND HALF” button on the teacher’s computer to mark the beginning of second half.

Second-half

Second half plays itself out much like the first. Once all teams have returned the teacher clicks the “END GAME” button on the teacher computer. The projector will then display a victory podium, which will indicate which team won. The session ends with an evaluation of the main subject matter content, team levels of co-operation and communication. Such evaluation could include going through the answers one at time (achieved by clicking the “Browse answers” link).

FAQ

  • How to pause a game. Click the “PAUSE“ button on the teacher’s computer. Click the “PAUSE“ button again to resume the game.
  • Nothing happens when I click the ”START“ button. This means that not all teams are ready and notified. Remember that each team must have a minimum of 2 learners with registered email addresses.
  • A team is unable to click the “Team Ready” button on their computer. Check the GPS device status. The absence of a ”V” mark indicates that there is no signal. Perhaps there is no available signal. Restart or replace the GPS device (Remember to register the new GPS number).
  • A GPS device has lost its signal. This can happen if the GPS device is taken indoors or if the signal is weak. Restart or replace the GPS device (Remember to register the new GPS number).
  • A waypoint is inadvertently placed in an inaccessible spot. The team can be moved manually into the zone. This is done on the teacher’s computer by clicking the “Move team to next waypoint” button.
  • Learners claim that they receive zero points for correct answers. On the teachers computer it is possible to see what answers have been given (see the “Browse answer” section). Points can be adjusted accordingly (click the “Adjust points” link).
  • Team movements are not displayed on the screen. The problem could be the browser. Push the “F5” button to refresh the browser (remember to input the answers again). If this does not work, check whether the team’s GPS device is still working and has signal.
  • A team has exited the picture on the main screen. You can change the magnification of the screen with the “Autozoom” tool (un-check the box in the “Autozoom” dialog box and click the “+” and “-“ buttons) and navigate in the map using the mouse.
